The newly issued teacher laptops bring along a few changes. The main one being that teachers will no longer be permanent administrators on their laptops. This change was primarily made for security reasons and the protection of our network. This means that teachers will no longer be able to install or manage programs or alter certain system settings. We understand that there is an occasional need to have administrator rights, especially at home where technology services may not be able to assist. An application called Make Me Admin can solve this problem. Make Me Admin is not installed on all devices by default. Follow these instructions when you need administrator rights on your device:
The first step is to create a help desk ticket explaining your need for administrator rights on your device. You will then be notified that you have been given access to the Make Me Admin application and it has been installed on your device. Then you can either click the Windows icon in the bottom left corner of your screen or press the Windows key on your keyboard to bring up the Start Menu. Type Make Me Admin and you should see the program at the top of the menu as pictured below:
Select Make Me Admin and you will be prompted with the following menu:
Click Grant Me Administrator Rights when you are ready to make changes on the laptop. You will see this notification in the bottom right corner of your screen letting you know that it was successful:
This will elevate your rights for 10 minutes. After which you will be returned to a standard user on the device and will receive another notification alerting you of the change:
Restarting your device will also remove your administrator rights.
While installing a program or making changes you may be prompted with a menu like the picture below:
You will need to enter your ECS username and password and select Yes in order to continue with your changes. When you are finished you can open Make Me Admin and select Remove My Administrator Rights or just let your time expire.
